The UASBC's education committee is dedicated to helping bring archaeological knowledge to members of the Society and interested members of the public. To do this, we have established an agreement with the United Kingdom's Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) that allows us to teach their courses. The NAS courses are designed with the lay person in mind, so you don't need to be a scholar to become NAS certified. The courses are also designed for divers and focus on underwater archaeology, but don't let that stop you: non-divers will easily be able to participate and all the information can be applied to land-based sites as well as submerged sites.
The training designed by the NAS grew out of a need to have divers trained in archaeology to help with the excavation of the Mary Rose. The training system has five levels ranging from an introductory course for people with no archaeology background to a more academic-based project. To start in on the program all you need is an interest in archaeology and a desire to learn more about it.
Contact our Education Director by email to enroll in a course, for more information regarding the NAS program or other ideas for education with the Society.
